THE GLOBAL ORCHESTRA
TEACHING COMMUNITY
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONs
-
Because you are a musician who either already teaches children about your country's and/or culture's music or dancing, or who doesn't teach children yet but surely could.
-
Nope! Anyone from any country may join the roster.
To teach online classes you'll have to have access to a strong enough internet connection to connect with a classroom live.
-
SO MANY STUDENTS around the world don't have access to a wide range of music ... Schools don't have budgets to pay for performing groups to come out for performances or to bring teaching artists on a regular basis for residencies.
SO MANY TEACHING ARTISTS live outside of the US, in the US but far away from population centers, or even just a long-enough drive from schools to make in-person visits impractial. Let’s break through these barriers! We can connect you to classrooms online.
-
It can! If done with proper thought, yes. Teaching online extensively during the pandemic gave all of us experience in learning what kinds of lessons work form a distance. Teaching online via Zoom can forge strong personal connections. Teaching participatory lessons online to classrooms of kids can inspire them to sing, dance and drum along in their physical space. You being on a screen doesn't matter so much if the kids, in their classroom, are having musical fun. We may use some of your recorded lessons, an will definitely use All Around This World curriculum materials, to provide context, but GO teachers will develop relationships with classrooms of kids by teaching live.
-
For this roster we're not seeking performing ensembles and won't be booking big concerts. We'll primarily be booking online exchanges with classrooms, mainly one musician teaching a small group of kids via video software like Zoom. This kind of personal teaching can work really well online...! Full band online concerts may work too, but that’s not our thing.
If you're part of a duo or trio that teaches workshops together, still apply, and we’ll see.
-
We may have reached out to you because we already know about the workshops you offer to kids. If not, after you fill out the registration form we'll figure out what you can develop that should work.
-
There will be a wide range...! Payment amounts are grossly unpredictable. Schools you'd think must have a lot of money may be spending in on many programs and will offer very little. Schools you'd assume have no money may get a grant for one special arts teaching program a year and be able to pay a lot.
You will set your base price for your work. You don't have to accept any teaching opportunities that pay less.
-
The Global Orchestra organization will promote your work through a snazzy website, solicit and arrange bookings and offer teaching opportunities (which you can accept or turn down), facilitate communication between you and the educational institution about pricing and other logistics, handle any contracts or invoices, work with you to develop and provide pre-lesson and post-lesson curriculum, work with teachers to facilitate the curriculum's use, accept payment from the school and make sure you get the amount they promised, in your local currency.
The Global Orchestra will also work with educational institutions to help them get grants and find other funding to pay for programming.
Remember, you will set the base price for your programming. When we tell schools about pricing well start with your base amount, then add 30%, which the GO will put toward the organization.
-
This part will be hard, and we know it. We all know well that if we just have a website with pictures of teachers, at the end of the day all we'll have is a website with pictures of teachers. We need to have an active booking agent who will out to schools and forging relationships.
We are raising funding right now to be able to support the consistent daily work of a booking agent. Being able to show foundations a strong roster of teaching artists will help us get those grans. We know this is circular, but your joining the GO roster before we have the funding to book you for work will be extremely helpful in raising the funding to book you for work.
-
We'll try our absolute best to get bookings, but no promises.
-
As you’ll see below, the form will ask for links to videos of work you've done or to descriptions of your current or previous children's workshops.
-
After every lesson we'll ask classroom teachers to fill out evaluations of the experience working with you and GO. We will also often to ask you to evaluate GO's organizational efforts and work with us to make the process better.
-
After you register and we look at what you’ve shared, the initial "audition" will be a discussion that we will schedule online to ask and answer questions. We’ll especially be interested in learnig more your past, current and future music work with kids.
-
We will balance our own decision-making with consideration from other GO teaching artists.
-
The initial deadline is THURSDAY, MAY 1st.
Starting to spreading the word in May/June will give us a chance to announce the project to schools in the U.S. while they’re planning for the upcoming school year. That said, the first set of bookings won’t happen until, at the earliest, this fall…and probably well after then. This a long-term project, and building it will take time.
Thank you thank you for your interest in joining the All Around This World/Global Orchestra Teaching Community! We really appreciate that you are a teaching-artist who wants to teach your beloved musical/dance/cultural traditions to children. Share whatever you’d like to share here about the cultural forms you perform, what you teach and how you teach it.
Right now we’d especially like to meet culture-bearers who are interested in teaching online and who would technically be able to teach interactive online classes. (i.e. have a phone/camera and access to reliable-enough internet.) If we get to the next step we may ask you if you’d be open to teaching/performing in-person in your geographic region if we happen to make contacts that are local to you…but being willing/able to teach online is a must.
We’re not going to ask for references/testimonials here, but if we get to the next step we’ll definitely want to hear from people who have worked with you. We don’t just want to find talented teachers; we would love to work with you if you are a talented teacher, and also kind, creative, and of course very responsible…a good partner in this project in every way.
