Taiko drumming is theatrical on purpose. Inspired by ancient Japanese court drumming, jazz musician Daihachi Oguchi debuted the first taiko drumming ensemble in 1951. Modern taiko performances are big and bold, with drummers performing intricately planned routines that are exciting because of confident choreography.
