MR. SAATHE TEACHES US TABLA

In Indian classical music the tabla player is usually responsible for holding down the Taal -- essentially the rhythm in an Indian Classical composition, though in truth the concept is more complex -- while a vocalist sings or other instrumentalist solos…though the tabla player almost always gets a chance to shine with improvisation in the course of a piece.

When Jay was on a teaching tour of India in 2023, Daly College music teacher Abhijit Saathe recorded a video for All Around This World to introduce our students to the tabla. Mr. Saathe is a confident soloist, but even when he is not taking the lead, his drumming helps the other musicians keep track of the rhythmic cycle. Mr. Saathe's tabla is strong, playful, and proud!
